Strathmore Artist in Residence Parker Speirs performs a provocative take on classical works through the lens of jazz and rock. Movement five of Johann Sebastian Bach's Violin Partita No.1 in B minor, and the chorale from the 1723 Advent cantata "Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben (Heart and Mouth and Deed and Life)."

Parker Speirs is a guitarist, composer, and educator. Well-versed in multiple styles of music such as jazz, rock, and classical, Speirs has performed as a studio musician and sideman, in addition to his own work as a band leader and collaborator. He can be heard on albums under his own name and his crossover trio, The Inventures, as well as with artists such as Ryan Conger, Omega Horns, and Mimi Knowles. Speirs holds a master’s degree in guitar studies and has led masterclasses on composition, improvisation, theory, ensemble interaction, and guitar.

A flagship program of Strathmore’s Institute for Artistic Development, the Artist in Residence (AIR) program was created in 2005 to support artists as they transition to professional careers. Since its inception, the program has mentored 106 musicians ages 16 to 32. Every year, a class of six is chosen after a competitive selection process. Strathmore’s AIR benefit from the support of mentor musicians, participate in professional development seminars, and are offered extensive performance opportunities throughout the 10-month program.
