Let's talk about James Augustus Hunter; although most people know him by the name "Catfish," he was born on April 8, 1946, in Hertford, North Carolina, and was the youngest of eight kids. Always busy working on a farm, James had still found time to get involved in sports. He was a star athlete at Perquimans County High School and a football and baseball player. His brothers taught him how to pitch, and he got good at it, catching the eye of scouts for the Major Leagues.
Just when it seemed like everything was going great, disaster struck. In November 1963, just before the draft season, James had a hunting accident where he lost a toe and got pellets stuck in his foot. It was terrible, and his dream of playing professional baseball might be over. And then along came the Kansas City Athletics. What was supposed to be a regular day of hunting turned into a mishap that caused Catfish Hunter to be tangled up with one of the worst Team Owners in history, Charlie Finley. But What did Charlie Finley do to Catfish Hunter? Didn’t he save his career?
They took a chance on him, signed him, and sent him to the Mayo Clinic for surgery. He recovered in the barn of team owner Charlie Finley. Finally, on June 8, 1964, he signed with the A's for a cool $75,000. Although he missed the rest of the season and didn't pitch until his debut in the Florida Instructional League that September, he was ready to go.
