How to find out the type of an oil color: the symbols on the tubes and how you can use the transparency in painting. Oil colors have four types of transparency: transparent colors, semi-transparent, semi-opaque colors and opaque colors. The transparent colors will be translucent even if you place them in a thick layer. Opaque colors completely cover a surface.
