Russia: Whistleblower Snowden touches down in Moscow

The man at the centre of one of the biggest leaks to hit the international intelligence community, Edward Snowden, landed at Sheremetyevo International Airport on Sunday. Snowden, a former CIA employee, fled from Hong Kong on May 20 and landed in Moscow on an Aeroflot flight SU13 at around 17:03 local time (15:03 CET).

The former National Security Agency contractor had escaped to Hong Kong after he revealed details about the US surveillance program PRISM to UK newspaper, The Guardian, June 9. US authorities charged Snowden for three crimes on Friday; theft of government property and two offences of espionage. If found guilty, he faces up to thirty years of imprisonment.

There is now mass speculation over which country will be Snowden's final destination. Some media have claimed it to be Ecudaor after a diplomatic car of the Ecuadorian Embassy was spotted outside terminal F of Sheremetyevo airport at the time of his arrival in Moscow.

Wikileaks released a statement on Sunday, from former Spanish Judge Mr. Baltasar Garzon: "The WikiLeaks legal team and I are interested in preserving Mr. Snowden's rights and protecting him as a person. What is being done to Mr Snowden and to Mr Julian Assange - for making or facilitating disclosures in the public interest - is an assault against the people."
