Jimmy Durante, born James Francis Durante on February 10, 1893, in New York City, was a beloved entertainer known for his gravelly voice, oversized nose, and unmatched comedic timing. The son of Italian immigrants Bartolomeo Durante and Rosa Lentino, Jimmy grew up in Manhattan's vibrant Lower East Side.
Durante's career began as a ragtime pianist, earning him the nickname "Ragtime Jimmy." His natural charisma led him to comedy, where his quick wit and unique delivery captivated audiences. He transitioned to film in the 1930s, debuting in Roadhouse Nights and starring in classics like The Man Who Came to Dinner and It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.
On television, Jimmy hosted The Jimmy Durante Show and became famous for his heartfelt sign-off, "Goodnight, Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are." His musical talents earned him a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1969, and he remains cherished for narrating the holiday classic Frosty the Snowman.
Durante was married twice and had one adopted daughter. A philanthropist and cultural icon, he passed away on January 29, 1980, at the age of 86. Jimmy Durante’s warmth and humor solidified his legacy as one of America’s most endearing entertainers.
