STORYLINE:

Retired General Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has been sworn in as Indonesia's sixth president after winning the country's first-ever direct elections for head of state..

"In the name of God, I swear that as the president of the Republic of Indonesia I will uphold the law and the constitution ... and serve the nation," he told the country's parliament and guests.

An Islamic leader held a copy of Islam's holy book, the Quran, over Yudhoyono's head as he made the oath.

The prime ministers of Australia, Malaysia, East Timor and Singapore attended the ceremony in a regional show of support for Yudhoyono. It was the first time that foreign leaders had witnesses the swearing in of a new Indonesian president.

Yudhoyono took over from Megawati Sukarnoputri, the eldest daughter of Indonesia's founding father Sukarno. Megawati was punished by voters in the September 20 elections for her aloof governing style and ineffective leadership.

She did not attend the swearing-in ceremony, something widely seen as a snub to Yudhoyono, who served in her Cabinet as security minister.

Her spokesman congratulated the new president and said the presidential palace was ready for him.

Later on Wednesday, Yudhoyono is scheduled to name his Cabinet.

The 55-year-old Yudhoyono begins his five-year term amid high expectations that he can fix the many problems that saddle the world's most populous Muslim country, among them rising Islamic militancy, massive poverty and widespread corruption.

Financial markets are awaiting the Cabinet line-up to gauge his commitment to rooting out corruption and fixing the country's economic woes - two key campaign pledges.

Fighting terrorism will also be high on his list of priorities.
