It all started when…
The Sower begins with Noel Diaz, who in 1984, founded a Catholic evangelization ministry called El Sembrador. Like Elijah the prophet, Noel as he was teaching and preaching a new evangelization in the Hispanic community, heard “a tiny whispering sound” (1Kings 19:12) saying to him, ” I want you to do the same work in English as well as Spanish”.
As a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ, Noel heard and answered God’s call. On April 4, 2008, in the chapel of St. Frances of Rome Catholic Church in Azusa California, the Sower ministry was born, and the first praise and worship of Jesus Christ through music, testimony, and preaching was enthusiastically received and proclaimed.
What is the Sower and why is it different than any other Catholic ministry? As Catholic Christians, we grew up with knowledge of Jesus Christ. We were catechized. We received our sacraments but we were never truly evangelized to the point of having a metanoia.
What is a metanoia? met/a/noi/a: (Greek in origin, noun) change in one’s way of life resulting from penitence or spiritual conversion. Having a metanoia involves our faith in Christ. Faith has two parts to it: intellect (belief) and will (act/choice). When we have a life, changing event happen to us either it be a significant one or little events that led up to a life event. We have a choice to act upon our belief, surrender to God and turn our life around. This gives us the courage to move our belief in Christ from just our minds, of what we know about Christ, to transforming our heart/spirit and truly engaging in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and His Church. This encounter is called a Metanoia!
How will you know if you’ve had a metanoia? A few examples of a metanoia in the bible are: The Road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13); The Woman at the Well (John 4:1); The Prodigal Son (Luke 15:17 -20); The Conversion of Saul (Acts 9:1) Family, friends, and co-workers will notice a change. Yes, the interior spiritual change that takes place when we give our lives to Jesus will only be authentic when it is visible to the world.
Once having a metanoia, and radically changing our lifestyle, we reject and rebuke every darkness that was once dominating our minds and hearts. We now live with a new Spirit, the Holy Spirit. The spiritual gifts bestowed upon us in our Baptism, the gifts that lay dormant for so many years are now awakened and used by God for our personal sanctification and for the salvation of others.
