Aug 20, 2011 A crowd gathers on a Saturday night as clubs close and start their own street party at a major intersection in the heart of downtown only about three blocks from the police station. Police finally arrived at the scene some 20 min later. For many years Fort Myers has had a problem with inconsistent police presence in downtown. At times there are 15 officers when the clubs close on the weekends and other times there are none at all, as displayed in this video. Shouldn't the nighttime patrons have a consistent sense of security and know that officers are close by? Many solutions have been offered to the city to alleviate late night overcrowding. One solution that other cities provide is an option for the nightclubs to stop serving at 2am, but not have to force people out into the streets at 2am. A soft closing would allow patrons to leave at their own pace over a period of 30 min or so. This has been proven very effective in other cities. Although local officials have received recommendations from other city managers, Fort Myers' city manager and the police department refuse to test a soft closing program. Apparently, this video displays their best efforts.
