The first Dueling Tree is found on the bank of Shikotsu River in the Yotei Grasslands. When you approach, you'll see a vast field of white flowers leading up a hill to a Dueling Tree covered in paper. The ronin is waiting for you at the top.

This Disciple of Takezo has been taking advantage of weak samurai and innocent travelers, so he's got a few dirty tricks up his sleeve.

The first thing to watch out for is a parryable combo where he raises one hand upward along the blade of his katana and then performs an overhead strike followed by a stab. Go for a perfect parry if you're confident, or dodge to the side to avoid it.

This Disciple of Takezo also has an unblockable attack where he slams into you and follows up with katana strikes. If you see a red glint when he backs down, prepare to dodge.

He can also perform a yellow disarming strike, but he'll call out with a voice line and sheathe his sword before doing so. Counter with your own draw attack by holding and releasing the Triangle button.

In the second half of the fight, he'll put away his katana in favor of dual blades. Swap to Dual Katanas to counter his new moveset. He has a new parryable combo with these weapons, but the overhead windup remains the same.

Defeating this ronin will net you Takezo's Charm of the Unrelenting Warrior, which increases your damage when your health is low.
