The Hockley Railway Viaduct sits just south-west of Winchester, near the M3 and St. Catherine’s Hill. This striking red-brick structure, once part of the old railway line, now marks the beginning of a scenic route into the city. From the viaduct, you can join the Viaduct Way, which follows the former railway track.
Head north along the path, with the River Itchen Navigation to your left. This historic waterway was once busy with barge traffic but now flows peacefully through the water meadows. The path is level and shaded by trees, with views of open fields and chalk stream wildlife. Swans, ducks, and the occasional heron are common sights.
Continue on until you pass beneath St. Catherine’s Hill, a prominent chalk rise crowned with a distinctive clump of beech trees. The path then curves toward the city, skirting the old grounds of Wolvesey Castle and nearing the Domum Road area.
Cross near the Garnier Road car park, where the route narrows to a riverside footpath. From here, follow the river through the Abbey Gardens and past the atmospheric ruins of Wolvesey Palace. This section is especially beautiful, with its manicured lawns, flowerbeds, and the crystal-clear chalk stream beside you.
The walk is a gentle journey that shifts from rural meadows and railway heritage into the heart of a medieval city, culminating in the grandeur of Winchester Cathedral.
