Doctor Faustus, in full The Tragicall History of D. Faustus, tragedy in five acts by Christopher Marlowe, published in 1604 but first performed a decade or so earlier.
Faustus, hero of one of the most durable legends in Western folklore and literature, the story of a German necromancer or astrologer who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for knowledge and power.

Doctor Faustus tells the story of a highly intelligent and ambitious German scholar who decides that he wants more from life than he currently has access to. He feels he has learned all he can about medicine, law, and logic, and that the only way forward for him is to learn magic. This turns out to be a bad idea. A complete Dr. Faustus summary is as follows:

Faustus learns magic with the help of his friends, Valdes and Cornelius. He summons a demon named Mephistophilis and asks the demon to offer Faustus's soul to Lucifer in exchange for twenty-four years of magical ability.
Although Mephistophilis tries to warn Faustus about the dangers of Hell, Faustus insists on his plan, and Mephistophilis soon returns with a contract for Faustus to sign.
Faustus signs the contract in his own blood and the words homo fuge (a Latin warning for him to flee) appear on his arm. He becomes concerned, but Mephistophilis summons personified versions of the Seven Deadly Sins to distract him.
Faustus and Mephistophilis travel to Rome and antagonize Pope Adrian using magic tricks: while invisible, Faustus steals the pope's food and boxes his ears.
News of Faustus's antics spreads, and Faustus is invited to visit Charles V, the German emperor. Faustus conjures an image of Alexander the Great for Charles's amusement and also makes antlers sprout from the head of a knight who mocks him.
Two servant clowns, Robin and Rafe, learn a little magic and get caught in some minor misadventures that provide comic relief for the play, namely attempting to get free alcohol.
The Duke of Vanholt invites Faustus to his court where Faustus again impresses nobles with his abilities. Robin, Rafe, and others whom Faustus has tricked arrive to get revenge, but Faustus casts a spell on them that silences them and sends them away.
The end of Faustus's twenty-four years approaches and he again grows concerned about what he has done. He asks Mephistophilis to conjure Helen of Troy to impress some scholars. One of them asks Faustus to repent, but Faustus ignores him.
Just before the stroke of midnight on his final night, Faustus begs for mercy, but devils drag his soul to Hell and rip his body limb from limb.
The play ends with a brief funeral for Faustus and a somewhat moralizing ending spoken by the chorus that warns audiences to beware of Faustus's fate.
