Intersectional identities challenge the schemas human beings use to categorize themselves. As a result, mixed race people can create tension simply by identifying contrary to how they present or are perceived. The same is true with gender and sexuality. In this talk, discover how slam poetry can be used to embrace conflicting aspects of your identity by using spoken word to frame your thoughts and explore hidden parts of yourself.

Summer Durant is a rising Junior in Georgetown’s College. She is pre-med, majoring in Psychology and minoring in French and Women's and Gender Studies. Summer grew up in the D.C. area and has struggled with her intersectional identity as a biracial woman throughout her entire life. She recently discovered slam poetry as a channel through which to turn her struggles with acceptance into something positive. She ultimately aspires to be a psychiatrist, so that she can foster these conversations about idiosyncratic identities and inspire change within the medical community.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
