He's climbing the ranks quickly!

Aberama Gold only won at York seven days ago in a prtty valuable prize and, in one of the msot valuable handicaps of the entire British Flat racing calendar, the six-year-old follows up in a 6lb penalty and fairly readily in the £250,000 Coral Stewards' Cup for trainer David O'Meara and jockey Andrea Atzeni.

O'Meara has only had Aberama Gold for a matter of weeks after the early retirement / sabbatical of former trainer Keith Dalgleish, and the Yorkshire trainer has clearly inherited a high-class sprinter in rude health after Aberama Gols sluiced through the mud at Goodwood to win the biggest sprint handicap of the season.

In what proved the final race of the 2023 Qatar Goodwood Festival - the final three races, all to be staged on the round course, were called off because of unsafe ground on one of the bends after persistent and torrential rain on the day-five finale - Andrea Atzeni also signed off with another huge win to bookend a fantastic week on the Downs. Group One-winning rider Atzeni is set to head to Hong Kong in a few weeks to commence a six-month riding stint in the Far East and this could feasibly be his final Glorious Goodwood for a decent period.

"He'll be a loss to British racing," O'Meara said about the jockey. Meanwhile, the trainer will be wondering how much higher Aberama Gold can fly - with the Ayr Gold Cup in September, Scotland's biggest Flat race, seemingly pencilled in as a potential next port of call.
