The Infancy Gospel of Thomas, a non-canonical text dating to the second century AD, offers a provocative glimpse into the childhood of Jesus—a period notably absent from the canonical gospels. Attributed pseudonymously to “Thomas the Israelite,” this apocryphal gospel is part of a broader tradition of early Christian writings that sought to fill in the narrative gaps left by the New Testament. Unlike the serene, all-knowing Christ of later orthodoxy, the child Jesus in this gospel, whilst still depicted as divine, is also shown to be dangerously capricious, wielding miraculous powers with unsettling ease and, at times, vindictiveness. The text raises some interesting ideas - blasphemous ideas for sure if you ask modern readers, but also those which show how early Christian communities understood the nature of Jesus in his formative years. Today, we’ll be examining this very text and seeing just how precocious, mean and violent this young infant Jesus could be according to these early descriptions.
