Last weekend, the leadership of the United States of America made a decision that provides for the acceleration of the delivery of essential goods without lifting economic sanctions that limit other types of aid to the new government of the Syrian Arab Republic , which overthrew the totalitarian regime of Bashar al-Assad, writes the authoritative publication The Wall Street Journal. As correspondents write, the US Department of the Treasury has received the authority to grant exemptions for organizations and companies involved in providing humanitarian aid to Syria, including the delivery of drinking water, as well as electricity, natural gas and other goods and services that are vital to the people of this country.
By the way, the American side is soon promising to lift some other sanctions imposed against official Damascus during the very long, multi-year rule of the Assad clan. Let us recall that media reported that the White House decisively announced the lifting of sanctions against Syria in order to facilitate the task of rebuilding this country. The US. is set to announce an easing of restrictions on providing humanitarian aid and other basic services such as electricity to Syria while maintaining its strict sanctions regime, people briefed on the matter told Reuters.

The decision by the outgoing Biden administration will send a signal of goodwill to Syria's new Islamist rulers.

It aims to pave the way for improving living conditions in the war-ravaged country while keeping U.S. leverage in place. US officials have met several times with members of the ruling administration, led by former Al Qaeda affiliate Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, since a lightning rebel offensive brought a sudden end to decades of Assad family rule on Dec. 8.

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, the faction that led the advance, has renounced its ties wih Al Qaeda and fought against the group but the U.S. continues to designate Hayat Tahrir al-Sham as a terrorist entity. Washington wants to see Hayat Tahrir al-Sham cooperate on priorities such as counterterrorism and forming a government inclusive of all Syrians.

Syria’s new Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani has called on the United States to lift crippling sanctions on his country, as he visited Qatar as part of a regional trip to seek support after the fall of Bashar al-Assad.

Following a meeting with Qatar’s prime minister on Sunday, al-Shaibani told reporters that US sanctions on Syria were an obstacle to the war-torn country’s rapid recovery.

“These sanctions constitute a barrier and an obstacle to the rapid recovery and development of the Syrian people who await services and partnerships from other countries,” he said.

“We reiterate our calls for the United States to lift these sanctions, which have now become against the Syrian people rather than what they previously were: imposed sanctions on the al-Assad regime.”
