Clap Clap (2019)

A magical realist short film shot in Yarmouth, NS; starring Sarah Fells, Jamie LeBlanc, and David Doucette. As with all my short films, I’ve included a brief summation of my thoughts below.



An official selection of the 2019 FIN Atlantic Film Festival and the 2019 Parrsboro Film Festival.

PROS
- I’m very fond of the tone.
- Sarah, Jamie, and David are always great to work with. (I should single out Sarah in particular -- as we shot this out of order, she had to use just vague direction and her general sense of the story to keep straight which emotion she was supposed to be feeling at any specific time.) But all three of them seemed to innately understand the difference between stage (where they spend most of their acting time) and film acting.
- I’m also fairly happy with the music, synthesized though it may be.
- The Foley work (sound effects creation) isn’t perfect – but considering that not one single sound you hear was actually recorded on set (they all had to be added later on), I’m pretty happy with it.

CONS
- Unfortunately, there are a few moment that don’t work on a narrative level (mainly the end), and some of the story elements needed clarification, I think. Writing is not a strong suit of mine, unfortunately.
- I really need to learn more about color grading and sound mixing.
