Oh boy, you all really, REALLY liked the last one! Well, here's part 2! Today we begin uncovering the trail ruins. I'll talk a little bit about the techniques that are involved. I've also taken some of the suggestions for settings and put them to use: no day/night cycle, no weather, no mobs.

A lot of you also had a bunch of really good questions so I'll answer a few of them here.

Q- How long does it take to get started on an archaeological project/how long does a project last?
A- Many, many projects are delayed. It is fairly common for a project to be delayed weeks, months, even years because the section 106 process takes a REALLY long time sometimes (gotta do it right, ya know?). As an archaeologist, you have to be flexible. I have always had a day job (and sometimes a side hustle) just so I wouldn't be reliant on jobs that may be pushed beyond when rent is due.

Q- Archaeologists don't use redstone to mark out grids, so what do they use, and what size are grids?
A- We use good ol' reliable string. Sink a stake in the ground and pull the string tight. As for the grids (we call them units) size, it really depends on the project. I've worked on projects with 1 meter by 1 meter units, and I've heard of larger. When chasing walls, sometimes you ignore the units all together to get a feel for the structure/feature. I'll be doing that in a couple parts of this video

Q- How long before its considered archaeology rather than grave robbing?
A- Some cultures think we are grave robbers no matter what! But generally, it is 50 years or older. The biggest difference between grave robbing/looting is the systematic excavation and recording of said excavation, along with the proper storage and conservation of the artifacts removed and sometimes the site.

If you have other questions ask away!

Disclaimer
(for you arch types out there watching this)

I am a professional archaeologist with many years worth of field work under my belt in the American Southwest. The information presented here is based on my professional and academic experiences. Not all archaeology is done the same everywhere and, as such, experiences differ. The information here is overly simplified and presented as a form of entertainment with the intent to lightly educate as well.

I guess what I'm saying is: if you're an archaeologist watching this, this is just for fun, don't be a jerk.

World was generated in creative mode, with non hostile mobs. Converted to survival with no weather, no mobs, and always noon. cheats are on so that I may add items to my inventory for use.
