We perceive the world through our five senses. And we use the information from our senses to create an internal representation - a map - of the world around us. But the map is not the territory. Your perception of the world is not the world. So whenever you're in the middle of an emotional situation with another person, it helps to take a step back and remind yourself that whatever you think you know about what's going on - who's right and who's wrong, who's being selfish or unreasonable, who's escalating the argument - your perception is not the situation. You cannot possibly know every piece of information about what's going on. Always have enough self-doubt to know that no matter how sure you feel about what's happening, there's always a chance you could be wrong.
