Today, we are going to unpack a truth that might seem contradictory at first, but is essential for your understanding of the narcissist’s psychology. We are going to discuss why, even though the narcissist does not love you—at least not in the healthy, genuine way you understand love—they are slowly realizing that it is nearly impossible for them to live without you.
Why? Because you weren't just a partner. You weren't just a date. You were what we call "Grade A Supply." And now that you are gone, the reality of that loss is causing their carefully constructed world to crumble.
Let’s get into it.
When a narcissist first chooses to discard you, or perhaps when you finally summon the strength to implement No Contact due to their overwhelming toxicity, their immediate reaction is rarely one of sadness. In fact, it is often a profound sense of relief.
We have to understand their internal landscape to grasp this. To the narcissist, maintaining a relationship with a high-value person—an Empath, a truth-seeker—is exhausting. Why? Because you are a mirror. Your very presence, your kindness, your morality, and your emotional depth constantly reflect their own perceived insignificance back at them. You are a walking reminder of everything they are not.
So, when the relationship ends, they feel a sudden "peace" and "freedom." They feel liberated from the burden of having to wear a mask around you. They no longer have to confront the constant mirroring of their own hollowness. They believe they have escaped the judge and jury, even though you likely never judged them—you only loved them. But to a disordered mind, your goodness felt like judgment.
In this initial phase, they feel high. They feel triumphant. They believe they have successfully "taken out the trash" (which is how they devalue you in their mind) and are now free to pursue what they believe are "superior" alternatives.
They look at the horizon and see new potential partners—new Supply—as shiny, exciting objects. They truly believe, in their delusion of grandeur, that they can upgrade. They think, "I can find someone who does everything she or he did, but without the emotional requirements, without the boundaries, and without holding me accountable."
This is the phase where they seem happiest. If you check their social media (which I advise you not to do), they appear to be living their best life. But I need you to understand: this is a temporary, chemical high. It is the relief of an addict who has just found a new fix, not the joy of a person who has found genuine happiness.
However, this initial relief quickly leads them down a treacherous path. The narcissist proceeds to make deeply regrettable decisions with their new Supply. To an outside observer—and perhaps to you—these choices often appear obviously poor. You might look at who they are with now and think, "Really? Them?"
But here is the twist: The narcissist, despite their disorder, often possesses a sharp, analytical mind. Deep down, they are acutely aware that these are terrible decisions. They know the quality has dropped. This is precisely why it is a slippery slope for them.
