Trans Voice: How to change your Resonance, effortlessly (PART ONE)

The theme this month is the larynx.

Last week we talked about our creepy analogy of your larynx being a spider that lives on a web. When the web is taut and supported the spider can move up and down with ease, and when it’s unengaged and loose, the spider can move but it takes a lot of energy and isn’t sustainable.

The bottom part of the web is made of the muscles that lower the larynx. They start at the hyoid bone, the top part of your larynx, and they insert into the collar bones, the shoulders and the shoulder blades. If we stabilize the bottom web it encourages the spider to go down, and as we know, when you lower the larynx you darken the resonance of your voice.

STEP ONE: Grab a seat
STEP TWO: Hold out the sound EEE at a comfortable pitch
STEP THREE: Grab under the seat and pull up lightly.
STEP FOUR: Hear the voice darken, cool huh?

It darkens because by pulling up under the chair, you’re engaging the larger muscles of your shoulders, shoulder blades, and collar bones which stabilizes the lower web. And because the lower web is taut and the upper web is not, the larynx spider goes down.
