In this video, I cover the controversial topic of doing too much cardio. This topic is controversial because a lot of people are under the false impression that if you want to lose weight, you have to do a lot of cardio. Actually, that could not be further from the truth. In fact, cardio can be very detrimental to muscle building. As the old saying goes, abs are made in the gym, but revealed in the kitchen. This old saying captures the simple fact that you cannot out-train bad nutrition. So, if you want to lose weight, you will have to watch what you eat.

Doing too much cardio can negatively impact your muscle building in three ways. First, too much cardio takes away your power and you are simply not able to exert maximum effort when training. The result is that you are not able to stimulate muscle growth to the same extent as when fully rested. Secondly, too much cardio can put your body in a metabolic state, where you begin to burn the hard-earned muscles. Finally, too much cardio can lead to all sorts of injuries, resulting in down time with no training.

Exactly how much cardio is too much depends on the individual and the circumstances. However, the American Heart Association recommends that we engage in physical activity 30 minutes five days a week. Those 30 minutes of physical activity include cardio, weight training, and all sorts of other physical activity we engage in on the daily basis. So, as a general rule of thumb, you should not be doing more than 30 minutes, two days a week. Sometimes, I also split up my cardio sessions into four 15 minutes sessions.
