How to Use AVERAGEIFS Function in Excel

How do you find the Average in excel based on multiple conditions? In this excel function explained video series I’ll show you how to use AverageIFS function in excel. Excel AverageIFS function is generally used to find Average in excel but based on several criteria. This is one of the most used functions in excel. Let’s learn how to calculate Average based on condition in excel by learning the use of AverageIFS function in excel.
AverageIFS Function returns the Average of its arguments that can be names, numbers, references or arrays that contain numbers. Also, it can find average based on the condition or criteria you specify.

The AverageIFS function looks like this

= AverageIFS (Average Range, Criteria Range, Criteria 1, Criteria Range 2, Criteria …)

There is three primary parameters or arguments for AverageIFS function.
1. Average Range: Here you will have to select the number, arrays, names or references from which you need to find Average.
2. Criteria Range: Now you need to select the data range where you have the list of criteria that you are going to select in the next parameter.
3. Criteria 1: Here you’ll have to specify a criterion. Based on this selection excel will look for it in the criteria range that you specified before.

Now comes the optional parameter.
1. Criteria Range 2: If you have multiple conditions then you need to select the second data range where you have the list of criteria that you are going to select in the next parameter.
2. Criteria 2: Here you’ll have to specify the second criteria. Based on this selection excel will look for it in the criteria range 2 that you specified before.
And so on. In this way you’ll be able to specify several conditions and based on that AverageIFS function will find out the average for you.

There are some important facts of AverageIFS and they are given below.
1. It doesn’t count an empty cell as input
2. It doesn’t count text as input.
So, as long as you are inserting number you’ll be able to calculate average based on multiple condition you specify using AverageIFS in excel.
