I had a high pitched whining noise from my interior cabin air blower (fan), and decided to replace it. It just takes a screw driver and the ability to remove a couple plastic pop rivets. A flat head can be used to remove those, or if you have a pop rivet removal tool (which looks like a small prybar), it would help.

As always, make sure you unplug the battery before you begin any electrical work on your car.

There is a good chance this is similar for other models of similar years as Subaru doesn't get too creative with parts.
