Menstruation is the regular discharge of blood and mucosal tissue from the inner lining of the uterus to the vagina monthly. It contains bacteria viruses, protozoans, microorganisms, parasites, fungi and chlamydia. Menstrual blood is likely to have greatest bacterial contamination. The infection can spread due to two reasons. First the cervix is open, thereby allowing the bacteria to enter from the vagina from the cervix and tubes. The retrograde flow of menstruation can carry the bacteria from the vagina into the uterus, tubes and the pelvic cavity causing genital tract infection. Sex during period increases the infection. Vaginal fluid and menstrual blood contains HIV if the person is infected. Infection can happen if the blood comes in contact with the person’s blood or with the mucus membrane .if there is a cut in and around the gentialia, allowing the virus to enter into the body. The amount of virus entering into the body also depends upon the viral load of the partner, sex during periods increases the risk of coercing the sexually transmitted diseases. When you or your partner have open sores or wounds on your genital area where you will have skin to skin contact during sex. Prevention is use condoms and avoid multiple sexual partners.
