In flood-ravaged Punjab, volunteer organisations are at the forefront of rescue and relief operations in the worst-impacted districts like Fazilka and Firozpur. With around 350 volunteers on the ground, teams are using motor boats to reach those stranded in areas with water levels as high as eight to ten feet. An appeal has been made for in-kind donations such as boats and tractors rather than cash to provide immediate assistance. Randeep, who has been on the ground for several days, highlights the need for continued support, stating, “Punjab is very strong, but often times the strong child does not get the support that that strong child also needs.” He notes that he has not seen much government aid in the far-flung, isolated border areas. The relief effort also involves converting local venues, like a wedding hall, into storehouses for supplies.
