Mustard gas in World War I left Harold Street with only a few years to live. 300 chickens saved his life. After 34 years of raising birds and beasts he’s a healthy 81 years old. Harold and Juanita Street run Piney Woods Pet Farm outside of Gainesville, Georgia. It’s really more of an animal sanctuary. Their home-grown zoo is free to the public and they take in any animal that needs a home. They mean it. Down through the years Harold estimates they have cared for over 10,000 animals and birds. Harold has federal and state licenses and is one of only a few people authorized to care for animals on the endangered species list. When I asked what was their big motivation, they answered in one word, “Children.” They are the happiest when the farm is filled with kids, looking, petting and feeding the animals. Hand a child a baby bunny and watch her face. Give a boy a bucket of feed and watch the chickens surround him. Juanita says the laughter keeps them going. Harold Street loves his chickens. He believes in the healing power of poultry. If it walks, swims, flies or crawls … Piney Woods Pet Farm has it. This story aired on WSB-TV Channel 2 Action News in 1975.

Long before CNN and Fox News the Traveler series with Andy Johnston was an Emmy award winning program that showcased amazing people, unusual things, local legends, food finds, outdoor activities, folk art, and family fun. In 2022 the Walter J. Brown Media Archives at the University of Georgia founded The Original Georgia Traveler -- Andy Johnston Collection to preserve and maintain the stories.

The Traveler Series celebrates life and living in America in the 1970s. Nostalgia, small towns, traditional life and the good old days. The stories give us ways to compare then and now. Folklore, music, handcrafts, vanishing America and unusual people. Funny stories, personal stories and amazing people are in this collection.

This story is presented for educational and preservation purposes and is covered under Fair Use. At the time it was broadcast the television station had a blanket music license with ASCAP, BMI and SESAC. The station maintains that license today. All music used is covered under that agreement.
