Texas Music Legend Joe Ely Dies at 78 — His Story and Career Highlights



Texas and country music fans are mourning the loss of Joe Ely, the pioneering singer-songwriter who helped shape progressive country music. Ely passed away on December 15 at the age of 78 due to complications from Lewy body dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and pneumonia. He spent his final moments at home in Taos, New Mexico, with his wife Sharon and daughter Marie.

Born in Amarillo, Texas, on February 9, 1947, Ely overcame early obstacles, once recalling that teachers told him he wouldn’t make it to 21. He defied the odds, rising from local bars and dance halls to become a global music icon.

Ely formed the original Joe Ely Band with Jesse Taylor and Lloyd Maines and later played with legendary musicians like Jimmy Pettit, Davis McLarty, and David Grissom. In 1972, he recorded All American Music with Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock as the Flatlanders, an album later celebrated worldwide.

He also toured with punk-rock legends The Clash, showcasing his boundary-breaking approach to music. Joe Ely’s fearless creativity, genre-defying sound, and dedication to his craft leave a lasting legacy in country and rock music.
