Mealworm breeding

Описание к видео Mealworm breeding

Insect rearing has gained a lot of interest lately because insects have potential to be used as an alternative protein source. They are able to convert low-value organic streams into their own biomass consisting of high-quality nutrients such as proteins, fats and chitin.

In this video the step-by-step rearing of mealworms in practice is explained. This video is made to serve as basic information for starting insect breeders. The needed equipment and infrastructure as well as the difference between mealworm production and reproduction are discussed. Furthermore, we go through the entire life cycle of the mealworm, showing the practical actions to be performed during all mealworm life stages.

This video is made by the research group RADIUS at Thomas More University of Applied Sciences* in close collaboration with Inagro Insect Research Centre. Both are involved as a partner of the Interreg NWE ValuSect-Valuable inSects project. This video is connected to the aims of the project.

* RADIUS is a multidisciplinary research group, dedicated towards sustainable chemistry based on insect and algae biomass. We perform research and can give advice on the cultivation and processing of insects and microalgae, biorefinery, and computational modeling.
