Lower garden work has been slow, with the rain and frost.. watching and planning the days I'm able to plant has been a chore in itself, but I knew it would be....Most folks still try to plant by the signs, fact is we postpone some planting according to the weather, common sense the rain obviously but looking at the temps and the time it takes the seed to sprout will save yourself the work of not replanting ....my advise either way, if the weather's good and the ground temp I good with no frost in the forecast, plant...
"The old Push plow"
this particular plow belonged to the pastor of the church I used to attend. He loaned it to me many times after moving here to Harlan...he's since passed on and this plow to me is a Heirloom piece, but not only me, but folks in the neighborhood use this to lay off thier rows to plant, no matter who has it, we know who is using it, keeping track of it every season...
Thatch Raking is removing undergrowth and excess grass clipping, but facts are, in the gardens of Appalachia back in the 40s, it was common to use a Thatch rake to keep your garden free of debris, aerating the soil, and for cosmetic reasons, sadly ya dont see this being done anymore, simply because of the effort that goes into thatch raking and modern tools of today, but back then this was all they had and what they used.....
To date in the lower garden. 2 rows of potatoes..
4 rows of Candy Corn
5 mounds of Boston Cucumbers
5 mounds of the improved Cucumbers
a half row of sewn Onions.....
Rain in the coming days has delayed the maters and beans....those are the major foods, the rest are add ons....nver the less, alot of work done and alot more to do...I appreciate your support and all the information you share...
