The more I educate myself on the systems that actually work against me, the more I realize the need to share and spread knowledge regarding #pregnancy , #birth , #postpartum and #blackmaternalhealth .So many of us mamas of color have the ability to carry and deliver babies, but the systems we have to rely on isn’t set up for us to succeed. We often lack the support, advocacy, and resources to make informed decisions about our bodies because we simply just don’t know. ⁣

According to the CDC, black mamas are 3 - 4x more likely than white mamas to die from common causes of maternal death. These stark differences don’t discriminate against education level, socioeconomic status, income, etc. A 2016 analysis of five years of data found that black, college-educated mothers who gave birth in local hospitals were more likely to suffer severe complications of pregnancy or childbirth than white women who never graduated from high school. I don’t share this to scare any mamas of color out there. I share this because in order for us to change this inequity in the healthcare system (along with many others), we must know about it.

So, how do we change these realities for our births?

1. We need the proper support - this means healthcare provider, doula and village. The people around us should be uplifting us to a positive experience, not doubting us or treating us like a number.

2. We need the proper preparation- we need to educated on our rights and options. So many of us lack the tools we need to properly advocate for ourselves in birth.

3. We deserve a peaceful environment- birth is sacred and should be protected - not interrupted. The environment you birth in matters (and yes, it can be peaceful in the hospital).

4. We deserve to be empowered - birth can be beautiful and should be. Too many black women have traumatic birth stories because they were listened to. This is unacceptable. Fear doesn’t deserve a place in our pregnancy.

5. We deserve a positive experience - because this IS a beautiful moment in our lives. That shouldn’t change where you’re at.
