Does Khyal truly belong in the Bengali language? Many have doubted, but Kabir Suman has consistently proven otherwise. In this long-form conversation, Suman explores the meaning of Khyal—freedom, imagination, and will—as defined by Swami Vivekananda in Sangit Kalpataru. He traces the origins of Khyal from the Mughal court of Muhammad Shah Rangila, through Awadhi poetry, to its flourishing across multiple languages—Punjabi, Sindhi, Marathi, Brajabuli, Maithili, and more.

Suman reminds us that Bengali too has a rich Khyal tradition: from Gopeswar Bandopadhyay and Gyanendra Prasad Goswami, to Rabindranath Tagore, Kazi Nazrul Islam, Dwijendralal Roy, and Satyakinkar Bandopadhyay. He argues passionately that Bengali Khyal is not only possible, but necessary—rooted in both heritage and modern practice.
