In this video I demonstrate a simple example of electrophilic aromatic substitution by brominating some benzene.
First I measured out 44 grams of bromine by opening some ampules.
I then added the bromine to 21.8 grams of benzene containing a few pieces of steel wool. The reaction was initiated by heating the solution for a short time with a heatgun. Once initiated it heats up to the boiling point by itself and the boiling was sustained by addition of more bromine. The reaction produced a lot of HBr which was led via tube to outside.
When the addition was complete, the reaction mixture was heated on an oil bath to 60 C for 30 min.
Then the contents of the flask were transferred to a separatory funnel and washed successively with 50 ml water, 10% NaOH solution and brine. Drying was accomplished by the addition of some anhydrous sodium sulfate.
After 10 min the solution was filtered and a fractional distillation was arranged. The bromobenzene came off at 155 C.
Yield 24.6 g, 60%.
