Japan is a content powerhouse. Its content market is the third largest in the world at around ¥13.1 trillion, behind only the US and China. Overseas sales of Japanese content reached roughly ¥4.7 trillion in 2022 — a scale comparable to Japan’s semiconductor and steel exports, underscoring IP as a strategic export industry.

Within this, anime and manga stand out as global phenomena. The global anime market grew to around ¥3.4 trillion (approx. $23B) in 2023, with more than half of its revenues now generated outside Japan and an estimated 1 billion+ anime fans worldwide. Many of the world’s top-grossing entertainment characters — including Pokémon, Hello Kitty, and Dragon Ball — originate from Japan. Yet, despite this enormous global demand, many Japanese character IPs still remain under-monetized and largely dormant. As a result, much of the economic value that could otherwise be created and returned to the original Japanese IP holders is not being fully realized.

Web3 has long been discussed as a potential solution to these structural challenges, but in recent years its practical impact has become increasingly tangible. By enabling creators and IP holders to connect directly with fans, tokenize licensing rights, and establish transparent royalty flows, Web3 opens the door to globally scalable and more equitable monetization models.

In this keynote, economist Jesper Koll will explore:
