Historic Discovery: Early Book of Mormon Manuscript Now Available!

In this live session, I’ll take you through the historical context of this translation and discuss the key figures behind it. Join me live as we delve into a remarkable chapter of Latter-day Saint history! An early manuscript of the Book of Mormon translated into Maori has recently been uncovered and made available online in the Church History Catalog. This 900-page handwritten document, dating back to 1888, represents the dedication and faith of early Maori Saints who longed to have the Book of Mormon available in their native language. The manuscript is the result of an extraordinary collaborative effort among missionaries and influential Maori leaders who recognized the spiritual power of this sacred record.

We'll eexplore the roles of Maori leaders like John Hoani Te Whatahoro Jury and Henare Potae, as well as Sister Georgina Marriott, whose handwriting preserved this remarkable document. Each of these individuals brought unique talents and spiritual commitment to this work, ensuring that the Maori people could experience the gospel message in their own language.

We’ll also look at the broader translation efforts of the Book of Mormon, which has now been translated into 115 written languages, with the most recent addition being Sesotho. This live session will highlight the ongoing commitment of the Church to make the gospel accessible to all, regardless of language or location.

In addition, we’ll take a look at the rich history of the Church in New Zealand—from the first baptisms in the 1850s, the establishment of congregations in the 1880s, to the dedication of the Hamilton New Zealand Temple in 1958 as the first temple in the Southern Hemisphere. We’ll also talk about the upcoming Auckland and Wellington temples, which reflect the ongoing strength of the Church in the South Pacific.
