Managing annual ryegrass is a challenge in the HRZ of Victoria. In this talk, Chris will cover three key strategies. The first is to get rotations right so that there are options for ryegrass management beyond what is available in cereals. Too many cereals will make ryegrass a challenge due to the lack of in-crop control options. The second is to get the approach to the pre-emergent herbicides right. As much control as possible is the key, particularly in cereal crops. Couple this with crop competition where possible. The third is to use tactics that reduce ryegrass seed set, such as crop topping in break crops or harvest weed seed control. These strategies work best in combination.
Following on from Chris, James will present findings from the long-term annual ryegrass management trial at Lake Bolac, which has been running from 2012 to 2020 and is in its’ last year. This trial provides a case study that demonstrates the strategies Chris will discuss with local data from a large-scale trial.
