Part 3 of my weekly snare drum nerd-out focuses on a classic 5.5x14 Slingerland solid-maple model from 1964. This drum is my go-to for tight, dry funk sounds, a la Bernard Purdie and Steve Ferrone in his days with legendary R&B group Average White Band. It loves to be muffled. In this case, I have a hand towel covering the upper third of the batter head that's held in place with two binder clips. Tuning is medium tight on top (the note D) and tight on bottom (G). This drum also works great for orchestral style playing, since it has a very warm let precise and articulate tone. It's also a great drum for light brush work and classic jazz. Slingerland's solid-maple snares pretty much set the template for what many contemporary companies are producing. The Artist series (like this drum) has the same shell as Slingerland's legendary Radio King, but can be found in the used market for a significantly lower price. If you find one, get it. You won't be disappointed!
