£30 DIY IKEA Ultralight Backpack - My First MYOG Backpack

My first attempt at a DIY MYOG build of an ultralight backpack which resulted in this DIY IKEA backpack made from the iconic IKEA Frakta bags.

The DIY ultralight backpack stripped in its barebones form weighs a respectable 380g. I'm using corrugated plastic (brand name Correx) for the frame instead of Z Lite or similar CCF mat which weighs an additional 200g for both pieces. The removable hip belt pockets are a further 30g a piece. The total weight for the backpack is 640g.

The dimensions for the MYOG IKEA backpack with my corrugated plastic frame is 65x30x20 resulting in 40L capacity in the main compartment. Due to the roll top closure, at its maximum extension the bag can be as high at 75cm, giving it a capacity of 45L.

The project took me roughly 100 hours to complete, from conception to finish. I was inspired by Sandiegomitch's build but thought I could improve on his design without adding too much additional weight.

Bulk of the time was taken up by the stitching process as everything was hand sewn. I estimate hand sewing the DIY IKEA backpack took 60-65 hours alone, with the result of time time spent planning, researching and consulting resources.

I spent a total of £30 on the build (not billing myself for time spent sewing and building the DIY IKEA ultralight backpack). The following spread is the cost breakdown by parts.
