WORSTHORNE WITH HURSTWOOD: Burnley Parish #5 of 8

This is by far the loveliest village you’ll have seen so far in this series. I absolutely fell in love with Worsthorne from the moment I got here. It’s full of gorgeous old architecture. After the Norman conquest of England, it may have been part of Briercliffe township, and the lords of Clitheroe appear to have divided the area among a number of free tenants.

By 1202 the village was known as Worthesthorn, a name which appears to have contracted over time. The second element possibly derives from the old English word “worþ” meaning homestead or it could be a personal name as in Worthing. With Hurstwood, hyrst is thought to mean a wooded prominence

In more recent times, the buildings in the village include cottages dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, and housing for millworkers dating from the Industrial Revolution. The village had a close association with the Thursby family, benefactors of the Burnley area. It has a number of listed buildings, including Jackson's House which was built in about 1600.

Here’s a quirky bit of history. Gorple, Extwistle, Brownside and Ormerod are the names of the four roads which meet in the village square, and used to be the names of the houses at the local school. The churchyard has the grave of a packmaster, a person whose job was to lead packhorses across the moors in special sunken trails that allowed the horses to walk unhitched

Hurstwood Reservoir, completed in 1923, has a capacity of 301 million gallons. It was designed to supply Burnley with drinking water, in much the same way as the other local ones. Apparently according to reviews, you can walk for hours across the moors and around the reservoirs, and around WORSTHORNE WITH HURSTWOOD.
