Aamad is a Persian word meaning arrival or entry. It is often performed at the start of the actual show and consists of Natwari bols, which are the basic syllables of the Kathak dance form. Aamad makes an essential part of Kathak and is also called aagman.
Amad in Kathak is the formal term for entrance, the first thing that any dancer needs to do is make an entry to the stage.
It is an entry movement that traces itself back to the Mughal era. It is known to evoke a sense of grandeur in its presence. It represents taking command of the area that one enters and the Guru lays down the basics for the same in a very simple yet engaging manner.
