IMPORTANT NOTE: This is NOT meant to be a test to show whether a face mask is medical grade or not, this test is also not intended to show how good or protective the mask is against viruses. I initially made this video simply to share with a group of my doctor friends, who was at the time of this video (April 2020), like everyone else, trying desperately to source for masks for use by their family members, which were in short supply and what were available were from unfamiliar sources/brands. So we were trying to figure out ways to do test the masks without destroying them, such as tearing up the masks to burn the middle layer or pouring water onto the mask, because at time of making this video, masks were in very short supply and every single mask was precious!

I saw this test on YouTube that suggested that a good way to test whether the middle layer of a 3 Ply surgical face mask is made of melt-blown non-woven material, is to do a breath test, i.e. by trying to blow out the flame (eg. from a lighter) whilst wearing the mask. So I was curious and decided to do the same test on the different masks I had at home at that time to see how they would perform for this test and for whatever it (the breath test) was worth, then maybe use that to help guide our own purchases of face masks. Although the best way is to get masks from recognised and reliable sources that are certified through laboratory testing, most of these sources that we used to get our masks did not have stock at that time (April 2020) and many people had to source for face mask from new sources So even though the breath test may not be foolproof, and those that 'pass' the breath test does not prove that they are medical-grade, we thought that this simple test may be a helpful DIY test that might at least help us to identify those masks that are clearly not up to mark.

As I mentioned, this video was initially intended only to be shared with that group of close friends because we were desperately sourcing for masks from unknown/untested suppliers/sources, I simply got my wife to point the phone camera at me as I did the breath tests on the different face masks I had at home then, so we didn't even redo the segment of last face mask that we tested, the video of that ended very abruptly and may not have shown how the flame of the lighter was so easily blown out because we were both truly taken by surprise and amused by how easily and quickly the fire went out when I blew at it through the face mask (the last mask). Subsequently, when more of my friends, including non-doctor friends, who were also trying to figure out how to tests face masks that they were also sourcing from unknown/unfamiliar sources, asked me if there were any way to test the masks, I decided to share the video, in all its amateurish imperfection, with them via my Youtube channel which I had just started a couple of months earlier, as it was a convenient way to share the video with them.

Please do your own further and other tests if your goal is to test whether the facemask you have is medical grade or not. This test is not about whether a surgical face mask is good or bad or whether & how it protects against viruses, including severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 ( SARS-CoV-2 ) coronavirus that causes Covid-19.

From what I read, a good 3-ply surgical face mask is designed with a middle layer made of specially treated melt-blown non-woven material that improves filtration by electrostatically adsorbing particles; while the inner layer is intended to absorb moisture from the wearer and the outer layer is a water protective layer. I was told that if you can extinguish a fire of a lighter easily by blowing at it while wearing the mask, the middle layer of the mask is then likely to be not made of melt-blown non-woven materials.
