Russian President Vladimir Putin met on Wednesday with Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez in Moscow.

The Cuban FM Rodriguez’s visit comes as the island faces blackouts and severe fuel shortages caused by a US oil embargo.

In separate talks, Rodriguez’s Russian counterpart Lavrov criticized Washington’s measure.

The energy crisis deepened after the White House pledged to impose tariffs on countries that provide any oil to Cuba, whether directly or in directly.

Venezuela, one of Cuba’s main oil suppliers, halted shipments in January after the US captured then-President Nicolás Maduro in a pre-dawn raid.

Mexico also suspended oil exports to Cuba following Washington’s tariff warning.

Moscow is reportedly preparing to send humanitarian fuel shipment to Cuba in the near future.

Russian tourist companies have halted package tour sales, after Cuba said it would stop providing fuel to incoming flights.
