Cockle Gatherers At Penclawdd - 1961

In this film from 1961 cockle gatherers use traditional methods.

Cockles are still picked at Penclawdd which has a long history of the industry, due to large areas of mud flats on either side of the Burry Estuary.

Today, Penclawdd is one of the few places left in the country where the traditional rake and riddle are still used, though horses and carts have long since been replaced by tractors.
