Vanguard Funds
Essentially an index fund is a pooled investment among a ton of investors, this pooled fund invests in an underlying benchmark or index, but they can also invest in a number of sectors. By buying into that one fund, you own a small percentage of everything that it owns. So for example, if you were to buy an S&P 500 index fund, by buying that index fund you would own a small % of every stock in the S&P 500 - thus tracking the entire index.
Index funds are great for people that are passive investors, trying to match market returns, and people that don't feel comfortable with stock picking.
If you're a really busy individual, or perhaps you're just not simply interested in the stock market but still want your money to grow, a passive investing strategy is best for you because you can literally set it and forget it.
Pros:
Low Fees - if you invest in Index Funds, the fees are really low - typically between 0.2% - 0.5%, with some Vanguard funds being as low as 0.04% per year. Compare that to the average mutual fund which has a fee of 1.3-2.5% per year.

Less risky, because you're purchasing the entire index, if one company ever has a stock price tank, it won't hurt as much because you don't have all your eggs in one basket.
Completely passive, you can put your money in Index Funds and over time you will either match market returns or beat them.
Removes the need to constantly study earnings reports, and results in you being far from average, even though it's a relatively simple strategy
Cons:
You can't really react too much, if you think a stock is super overvalued, like for example if Tesla were included in the S&P 500 and the index funds were overweighted in Tesla, you wouldn't be able to act on it.
You don't have control over the holdings. The index funds are set, so if you want more control over your holdings you'll have to add to your portfolio with an individual stock
Less satisfying if you're into investing and stocks - it's just not as exciting.
Why Vanguard?
First their fees are the lowest in the industry. On average, the Vanguard fund expense ratio is 83% less than the industry average. With an average expense ratio of 0.1% - the average ETF/mutual fund expense ratio is closer to 0.5%. [https://investor.vanguard.com/index-f...](https://investor.vanguard.com/index-f...)
