A Bit of Background on the Acropolis and Parthenon:

The Acropolis of Athens is a rocky hill that has been inhabited since before 3000 BCE, serving as a center of Mycenaean power and later as the heart of ancient Athens. The site became a sacred precinct dedicated to Athena, the city’s patron goddess. Over centuries, it was home to temples, treasuries, and monuments, including the original Hecatompedon and the Temple of Athena Polias.

The Parthenon, built between 447 and 432 BCE under Pericles, is the crowning glory of the Acropolis. This Doric temple, with its iconic fluted columns and marble sculptures, was dedicated to Athena Parthenos. Its friezes and pediments depicted mythological scenes, and the inner chamber once housed a massive gold-and-ivory statue of Athena. The Parthenon is considered the culmination of classical Greek architecture, blending Doric and Ionic elements for both strength and elegance.

The Acropolis also includes the Propylaea (grand entrance), the Temple of Athena Nike, and the Erechtheion with its famous Caryatid columns. Over the centuries, the Acropolis has been a pagan temple complex, a Christian church, a mosque, and now a symbol of Greek heritage and democracy.
