Woodturning Apple Wood Bowl - Finish turning a twice-turned apple bowl that was roughed when green

A while back I picked up some apple logs from a local orchard. Some of them were pretty gnarly (and good candidates for resin!) but I had a few trunks that were of a decent diameter and were solid for the most part, though a bit soft in places. I rough turned a bowl from one of the bigger logs and stuck it in the converted dishwasher kiln for a few weeks. I didn’t record the rough turning but thought it would be fun to show the finish turning process. You can see how oval the bowl went when drying - so much in fact that I had to turn the tenon down to use the smaller 50mm jaws because I didn’t have enough wood left to get it back to round and carry on with the 100mm jaws. Fortunately I had enough thickness to complete the bowl and I’m pleased with how it turned out.

I’ll be making some modifications to my dishwasher kiln in the coming weeks. I’m using a 60w incandescent bulb for the heat source and the first load I dried in it came out perfectly. However, since that first load I’ve blown (2) 60w and (1) 40w bulb. A friend uses a humidity controller and is having good luck with it so I ordered one and am going to give it a shot. I’m picking up a load of green butternut this weekend and want to get it roughed and into the kiln as soon as I can. I’ll keep you posted 😃
