Frank Skinner and David Baddiel on Match of the Day

Описание к видео Frank Skinner and David Baddiel on Match of the Day

Well, this is extraordinary, and there is no way the BBC would do such a thing nowadays: on the last day of the 1993/4 season, they invited Fantasy Football League's Frank Skinner and David Baddiel to be the pundits on Match of the Day, and generally take a light-hearted look at the action. This is despite the fact that it's obviously the most significant day of the season, and although Man Utd had already run away with the title, the likes of Everton, Southampton, Ipswich, Oldham and Sheffield Utd were all battling the drop. It was a tense afternoon indeed, and one that went to practically the last kick.

But, actually, the comedy is quite a breath of fresh air and the perfect antidote to the over-hyped life-or-death every-match-is-crucial tone that we get on the majority of football broadcasts these days (looking at you, Sky Sports News). Also great is that Frank doesn't pull any punches after Anders Limpar wins an extremely dodgy penalty, rather than pussy-footing around the subject.

Is this edition of Match of the Day unique in that none of the pundits in the studio were ex-footballers?

(Please remember that this is an off-air VHS recording, so don't go expecting 1080p HD quality. I'm fairly certain that this video isn't commercially available, and I've uploaded it for its historic interest only. That said, if you are a copyright holder and object, please don't hesitate to contact me.)
