STORYLINE:
Dozens of demonstrators gathered in front of the British embassy in Rome on Tuesday in support of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, whose lawyers have opened a final U.K. legal challenge to stop him from being sent to the United States to face spying charges.

The 52-year-old has been fighting extradition for more than a decade, including seven years in self-exile in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London and the last five years in a high-security prison.

“We really hope that between today and tomorrow we could finally put an end to the condemnation and the torture of this man who just brought us information and journalism, and journalism cannot be a crime,” said Claudia Nastrucci of “Free Assange Italia.

Assange, an Australian computer expert, has been indicted in the U.S. on 18 charges over Wikileaks’ publication of hundreds of thousands of classified documents in 2010.

Prosecutors say he conspired with U.S. army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning to hack into a Pentagon computer and release secret diplomatic cables and military files on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

He faces 17 counts of espionage and one charge of computer misuse.

If convicted, his lawyers say he could receive a prison term of up to 175 years, though American authorities have said any sentence is likely to be much lower.
