Stock tank VS 23 Gallon tank. Which one are you picking and why!?

I recently upgraded my fuel tank to the 23 gallon tank from Toms Offroad. But I’ve heard a lot of people ask why, or wonder if they should do it. This isn’t an exhaustive list of reasons, but a few that I thought through when doing the upgrade.

First, capacity. This one is easy, it’s in the title. 23 Gallons is larger and better for long trips. But if you don’t drive far, the stock tank will do just fine.

Second, the look. I like the look of the stock tank way better than how the 23 gallon tank hangs down. Measuring from the ground, my stock tank is 22.5 inches from the ground, where as my 23 gallon tank measures 20.5 inches from the ground.

Third, fuel pump. This doesn’t matter if you are running a carbureted engine, but when running EFI this is something to consider. The stock tank doesn’t allow an in tank fuel pump. Thus, you need a frame mounted fuel pump. Some people prefer this, but after running mine for almost 2 years, I had so many issues with my frame mounted pump. I prefer an in tank pump but I can only get that with the 23 gallon tank.

Fourth, simple fix, but there is less room to run dual exhaust with the 23 gallon tank.

And finally, the 23 gallon tank will read fuel differently. The last 1/4 of a tank will seem to go really quickly, but in reality it’s just a design flaw with the tank. When the sending unit reads 1/4 of a tank, it’s really only about 1/8 of a tank because of how the tank is designed.
