Also for those of you who are confused about the movie, alessa, and dark alessa, here is a synopsis (SPOILER ALERT)

Here's what happened: Remember the scene when the little girl was in the restroom with Colin, the janitor? The janitor's coveralls had a name patch on them that said: Colin. He molested her. She tried to tell everyone what Colin did to her, but instead of believing her, they blamed the little girl for saying such unspeakable things.
So they tried to sacrifice her. Her hatred ignited the coal fires under the earth, driving everyone out of the town, and pulling all of her persecutors into a hellish version of Silent Hill.
Colin was punished by being tied up in the restroom stall where he molested her, his body pulled into contorted shape so the only way he could move was by scraping his groin on the ground - a fitting torture for the part of his body that violated her
The movie is scary, not because of the supernatural, but because this is what used to happen in real world. Back in the old days, when a girl told on her abuser she got slapped around, diagnosed as crazy, and locked up in a mental institution. The abuser always went free
The victim cannot stand for those around her to live happy and free, unaware of her pain. She is compelled to suck everyone around into her private hell, either as an ally or an enemy. The tragedy of movie is the tragedy of what happens in real life - nice people who care enough to fight for the victim end up sacrificing all hope of a normal life.
That's why Alessa's mother told Sharon: "Be careful what you choose". The little girl with the sunken eyes is Satan, the part of us that says "Use your power. If you are in the right, violence is not wrong." You saw Sharon take girl-Satan inside of her body, and pour black hatred out of herself when the church-lady stabbed her. This gave Alessa the power to invade the church
As you can see at the end of the movie, Sharon and her daughter paid the price for becoming entangled in this crusade. They are dead ghosts now, just like people in the real world who let their need to help people trick them into sacrificing their whole lives for the struggle. It is a noble thing, a right thing, but once you embrace the battlefield, you never get to go back.
