Welcome to Family Story Time at the Colusa County Library! Today we are reading “Every Month is a New Year” by Marilyn Singer and Susan L. Roth, a book full of beautiful poems about different cultures, how they celebrate the New Year, and how their celebrations are during different times of the year.

Here are some questions that parents and children can discuss after listening to the book!

1. Were there any traditions that you already knew about? If so, which ones?
2. How is the dragon able to dance during the Chinese New Year celebrations in Hong, Kong?
3. How is water used during Songkran in Thailand?
4. What special flowers are celebrated during Enkutatash in Ethiopia? What is your favorite flower?
5. Out of the different New Year celebrations that we learned about in the book, which one was your favorite?

Here is a fun movement activity that parents and kids can do together after listening to the story!

Play a “Roll the Dice” movement game with the entire family!

To play the game, simply assign movements to the numbers on the dice. For example: 1) Hop, 2) Jumping Jacks, 3) Windmills, etc. The number of different movements will depend on whether you have one dice or two.

Have everyone in your group take turns rolling the dice. If your dice lands on 2 and you have assigned jumping jacks, have everybody in the group do two jumping jacks. Make sure that everyone has had a chance to roll.

Here is a fun craft that parents and kids can do after listening to the story!

Create fireworks by using paint and toilet paper rolls! All you need to do the activity is a pair of scissors, some toilet paper rolls, white paper, and different colors of paint.
